The results of the 2008 HI-MACS® Design Contest really stand out from the crowd – even at Zona Tortona.
Due to the overwhelming success of the 2007 HI-MACS® Design Contest, the event was extended to include 10 European nations the following year. “Catering”, the theme of the contest, was intentionally kept relatively vague so as not to restrict the creativity of the design students and permit them to use all of the possibilities that the material of the “New Generation“ has to offer. Once completed, the creations were shown at exhibitions and trade fairs throughout Europe, among others at the renowned furniture fair Zona Tortona in Milan.

Project: « DEKO » - Winner
Design: Karel Vranek – Czech Republic
Manufacturer: Polytrade CE
Karel Vranek's project persuaded the jury because of its complex interplay of form and shape.
Like a hydra, this design relies completely on the thermal mouldability of HI-MACS®. The result is a baroque-like table, the Alpine White colour of which, combined with the fuchsia-coloured plexiglass, exudes a certain effortlessness. Almost too good to put glasses on.
Project: SLIDE AND EAT - Journalists' prize
Marco Maturo, Benedetta Medici and Alessio Roscini - Italy
Manufacturer: Alequadro-Glem Superfici S.r.l.
The unit consists of six HI-MACS® sheets seamlessly combined in a thermoforming process to create an expansive dining and play room for children. The table has preformed openings for plates, glasses and cutlery so that these remain in the position intended for them and nothing will be spilt. The key feature of this dining unit: the outside of the backrest doubles as a children’s slide.
Project: COOLSTOOL
Design: Elena Gerber - Germany
Manufacturer: Corpus Linea – Klöpfer Surfaces
The “COOLSTOOL” stool is simple and playful with gracious curves and simple lines yet will still withstand the heaviest loads. To create these curved shapes, the designer has taken full advantage of the thermal malleability of the material. An interesting feature is the red plexiglass seat that can be removed and replaced by another colour, at the whim of the owner. The green and orange seats are made of wood and are also removable.
Project: ADAPTABLE
Design: Emelie Hedén & Isabelle Olsson - Sweden
Manufacturer: LG Collection
The "ADAPTABLE“ table by the Swedish finalists is captivating because of its straight lines and sharp edges. The brightly coloured and versatile dividers that can be pushed vertically into the surface of the table are an answer to the need to change rooms and create a private space.
Project: BAR'ROC
Design: Natacha Lesty - France
Manufacturer: Mobistrat
The “BAR’ROC”, consisting of a glasses and spirits cabinet, combines modern, contemporary lines with baroque elements. The young designer made use of the translucent qualities of HI-MACS® in this creation, with the squiggly ornamentation, milled into the material and combined with precisely positioned light sources, becoming an after-dark head-turner.
Project: MAINO
Design: Mai Honda - UK
Manufacturer: BSF Solid Surfaces
The “MAINO” cocoon is the perfect seat for anyone craving calm and privacy. It was manufactured from two differently coloured HI-MACS ® sheets in a thermoforming process, resulting in an interesting contrast between the inside and outside of the cocoon. The small coffee table is also made of HI-MACS®.
Nameless
Design: Géza Csire - Hungary
Manufacturer: Polytrade CE
The futuristic shelving unit relies on the thermal mouldability of HI-MACS® that enables awe-inspiring and precisely drawn curves to emerge. A polishing process was also used in the manufacturing process to give the object a fine, clean finish.
Project: LILLY
Design: Matej Brzy - Slovakia
Manufacturer: Polytrade CE
This beautiful and yet practical bar table consists of two symmetrically cut HI-MACS® sheets, with its organic shape giving it the elegance and delicateness of a plant. For ease of transport, the table can be simply dismantled into its two individual parts and then re-assembled again later.
Project: BLOU
Design: Rafael Zaragoza Alvaro - Spain
Manufacturer: Global Nabuurs-Alpisa
The “Blou” is a functional, elegant plate holder, as if created for use in a tapas bar. It demonstrates that it is possible to eat a snack comfortably both sitting down and standing up. Guests can simply place their plates in the made-to-measure openings intended for this – and then can relax with a glass in one hand and eat tapas with the other.

Design: Anton Nikitin - Russia
Manufacturer: Heinrich Viethen – Klöpfer Surfaces
The Russian finalist presented a rocking table with a sprung base in the shape of a question mark, with the openings incorporated in the surface of the table serving as practical glass holders. The concept of the table is as simple and effective as its appearance: every table consists of a 12 mm thick thermo-formed sheet made of HI-MACS®.
