HI-MACS® at London Design Festival 2010

“TWISTED & GILDED” by Philip Michael Wolfson

For 100% Design London 2010 the studio of Philip Michael Wolfson is launching a new variation on ‘TWISTED’ – a sculptural furniture collection entirely made of HI-MACS® successfully exhibited at Milan Design Week this year - with the presentation of ‘TWISTED & GILDED’ which examines the possibilities of applying a surface layer of gold leaf onto the HI-MACS® material and the resulting effects of contrast and surprise.  The historic reference of the gilded surface promotes a futuristic and historic/ utilitarian and noble character of design.

The complex shapes of ‘TWISTED’ create a choreography of motion and continual transformation, and they reveal Wolfson’s unique approach to design; layering and manipulating HI-MACS® into fluid shapes and forms, where shadow and reflection are an integral part of the seduction of the work. Manufactured in England by SOLIDITY Ltd, the TWISTED series pushes the material boundaries.  Stretching, bending and curving seamless forms, the works appear frozen in space.

Twisted is composed of: Eruption, Twisted Bar, Split stool, Twisted Desk, Why Not - and exhibited for the first time in the UK,  Split chair low, Split chair high and the new  Split & Gild stool from the ‘TWISTED & GILDED’ collection.

“IN EVERY DREAM HOME” by Paul Kelley

Paul Kelley will launch an entirely new furniture collection entitled 'In Every Dream Home' at Gallery Fumi during this year's London Design Festival. With seven large-scale pieces on show, Paul Kelley demonstrates that he is one of most significant furniture makers working in the UK today.

One of the seven furniture pieces includes a white console table made from HIMACS®. At first glances the console table looks like solid marble, smooth, seamless and with a translucency you would expect. But it is in-fact made from HI-MACS®!

Paul Kelley's furniture design is inspired by the works of artists such as Donald Judd combining a rigorous application of the linear form with a quality of workmanship rarely seen. His work is made entirely by hand and available in a limited edition.

Paul Kelley's furniture is in demand from architects and interior designers looking for unparalleled individuality and uniqueness.

As Paul Kelley says “HI-MACS® is a world of infinite possibilities, it has allowed me to design and make furniture of extraordinary quality and push the boundaries of the furniture I make. It can be worked in the same way as wood. The solid surface can be sawn, cut, drilled or planed using conventional carpenter's tools.”

HI-MACS® is simple and easy to handle and it has versatile design potential that inspire craftsman to experiment with the thermoplastic and translucent properties of the material, to engrave it, print it and much, much more. It is an exceptional material with exceptional characteristics.
