The Deventer Theatre, a theatre complex with cinema and apartments, was built in 1995 in Deventer, Netherlands. In 2010 M+R Interior Architecture, a design agency who specialize in redesigning and refurbishing projects in the leisure and retail Industry, was commissioned to implement a total makeover of the theater with an specific task: redesign the space to make it more appealing and multifunctional to visitors, inviting people to come in and to stay on once the shows have ended.
Architects Hans Maréchal and Marie-Louise Rookimans - founders of the design studio - wanted to bring more transparency to the building, so they decided to completely rebuild the ground floor using HI-MACS® for all the furniture in the public areas. The architects choose HI-MACS® as the material allowed them to make the desired shapes perfectly seamless.
The concept was to connect public space with the theatre’s entrance in a fluid transition. The main changes were to move the entrance outward, to use big glass doors and to design a huge bar area in the middle of the foyer as a meeting and relaxing point.
HI-MACS® was the material chosen and it is present in all functional furniture of the public area: 1 mobile helpdesk, 3 service desks and 1 impressive curved white main bar.
Approximately 40 sheets of HI-MACS® Alpine White were used for the full project.

The 9,5 meters long white curved bar is a ship shape, designed as a tribute to Deventer’s history as a river harbour. It comprises 5 different sections, which are seamlessly joined to create the iconic bar. Thanks to the HI-MACS® thermoforming properties and seamless joints, the whole piece appears as one single smooth and monolithic piece. The bar features 2 beer taps, coffee machines and refrigerators. The hygienic properties of HI-MACS® make it perfect for direct contact with beverages and food.
